Summary
The renovation and restoration of this storied clubhouse unfolded over nearly two decades, reflecting a long-term commitment to preserving the character of a landmark building while thoughtfully adapting it to the evolving needs of its members. The effort was significantly interrupted in 2019, when a devastating fire and the subsequent firefighting efforts flooded all four floors of the historic structure, creating an extraordinary restoration challenge.
Originally constructed in 1909, the iconic Tudor Revival clubhouse was designed by architect Chester Hugh Kirk to replace an earlier clubhouse that had also been destroyed by fire. More than a century later, the building once again required an extensive and highly sensitive intervention. JBD and the project team undertook the restoration of the clubhouse’s architectural and interior elements, carefully returning the building to its distinctive historic character while integrating the infrastructure, functionality, and amenities required for contemporary club life.
The clubhouse encompasses a diverse range of member and guest experiences, including multiple destination dining venues, member lounges, locker rooms, and guest accommodations. The guest quarters, including a series of hotel-style rooms, were among the spaces recently completed by JBD prior to the fire and subsequently became an important component of the restoration effort.
Throughout the project, the design approach balanced preservation with purposeful modernization. Historic detailing, materials, proportions, and architectural character were restored wherever possible, while spaces were reconfigured and upgraded to better support today’s patterns of member use. The result is a clubhouse that feels deeply rooted in its history yet functions seamlessly as a contemporary destination for dining, gathering, recreation, and hospitality.
The completed restoration honors the enduring legacy of this remarkable Tudor Revival building while ensuring that its next chapter is defined by the same vitality and sense of community that have characterized the club for generations.
